Taoism considers the "Tao" to be the origin of the universe; the *Tao Te Ching* states, "The Tao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, Three gives birth to all things," implying the hierarchical and infinite possibilities of the universe's creation. Zhuangzi further dissolves the boundaries of time and space with "Heaven and earth and I were born together, all things and I are one" (*On the Equality of Things*), suggesting that the world is not a singular existence, but a diverse and symbiotic whole.
